Company Overview

Stitch Fix is a personal styling service for women on the go. After completing a personal style quiz, Stitch Fix will select clothes and accessories matching your taste and style and ship direct to your door. Try on all the items, keep what you like (prices available on your account) and ship the rest back with prepaid labels.

“We use the feedback our clients enter in a few different ways,” said Erin First, PR Manager for Stitch Fix. “First, the stylists see all of the feedback you left on past fixes, so that they can take into account for future fixes. Secondly, the feedback you leave is reviewed in aggregate by our buying and merchandising team, so we can understand why certain pieces might or might not have worked, and shared that information back with our vendors to make better buying decisions.”

My Initial Thoughts

Completing the style profile was very easy. You start with basic measurements, then move to photos of clothing and accessories where you will select if you like the items or not. There are questions about items you would prefer to see (or not prefer) such as prints, patterns, styles, etc. You can also include comments to your stylist to tell them anything else you think might help. You can also go back into your style profile at any time to update measurements or likes / dislikes. Overall, it only took a few minutes to complete the profile.

Once your profile is complete, you can schedule your fix to arrive. Since you only have a few days to try everything on and return the items, this flexibility is nice to work it into your schedule. There is a $20 styling fee for the fix, but this is credited to your order should you opt to keep anything.

For this review, I enlisted the help of a friend Robin to try on the clothes. She was very impressed with the selection and loved everything the stylist picked. Each item was a little bit different, Robin said she could see herself wearing anything in the box.

Once you’ve made your decisions, to return items you login to the website and check out. You can select whether to keep or return each item and even include commentary on your thoughts such as didn’t fit, didn’t like the color, etc. This feedback is great for the stylists for your next box. Then you pack up the unwanted items and place in the mail. This was a feature I really liked since you don’t need to find a UPS or Fedex drop off center to return the box.

Stitch Fix has a $20 styling fee that can be applied to your purchases, additionally, you receive a discount if you purchase everything in the box. Individual items in our box were priced around $50, which may seem high to some, but it’s spot on in the clothing world. In comparison to other similar styles online at Macys, JC Pennys, or other popular retailers, items are bout the same price – what you’re missing out on with Stitch Fix is the sales and coupons.

The Verdict

I think there’s a lot of value to Stitch Fix. The clothes were very trendy and stylish. As far as pricing, if you don’t mind paying a little more to skip the hassle of going to the store, dealing with the mall, searching through rack after rack hoping to find your size – this is a great option. I think the Stitch Fix target of busy women is spot on. If you’re a mom with kids in tow, I’d rather complete a quick questionnaire and have clothes, styled for me show up at my door. If you think about the higher price point as a value on your time, gas to go to the store and potentially come back empty handed – it might be worth it.

“We serve a wide variety of women of all ages, but the one thing that they share is that they are all time-starved,” said Ms. First. “We’re able to take one thing off of their plate and deliver them pieces that have been hand-selected to fit their unique budget, taste and lifestyle.”
